Affordable council housing will be built in the centre of Coalville after North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) planning committee gave applicants the nod.
At the meeting on Tuesday 13 February, it was agreed the disused police station in Ashby Road will be demolished to make way for 24 affordable homes that will then be purchased by NWLDC. These will be made available to some of the more than 700 households on the council’s waiting list for affordable homes in the district.
It was also confirmed by the committee that 166 new homes will be built on land off Greenhill Road, Coalville, and a further 213 homes at Grange Road, Hugglescote. Both these applications had previously been approved in outline, but now also have reserved matters approval.
There was further positive news for Coalville as an application to convert an empty building in Hotel Street into a cafe and separate financial and property business with flats above was also approved. Several members of the committee expressed their delight at the applicant’s plans to invest in the town.
Speaking about the decisions, Chairman of Planning Committee, Councillor David Stevenson said: “We’re pleased that significant investment is being made to bring much-needed new homes to North West Leicestershire. The applications for Greenhill Road and Grange Road fit into our Local Plan and will help meet the housing demand in the district.
“The new affordable homes on the site of the derelict police station will be a real boost for Coalville, regenerating a disused area, and providing homes to some of the people on our waiting list that have asked to live in the town centre.
“We’ve also supported an entrepreneurial plan to create new businesses and flats in Coalville, bringing an empty building back into use. This is a real positive to the town as it secures new jobs, and fits nicely with the regeneration of Coalville.”
