Residents in North West Leicestershire are being reminded to keep their poll cards safe ahead of the local elections on 2 May.
North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) delivery of poll cards to registered voters began this week – anyone voting in the local elections should bring their poll card with them to vote.
The district is taking part in a Government voter ID pilot meaning that identification will be required at polling stations in order to vote in May. Identification is not normally required to vote in elections in the UK.
North West Leicestershire is taking part in the pilot to help Government learn the best methods of preventing election fraud in the UK.
Other forms of ID including passports and driving licences will also be accepted at polling stations. A full list of acceptable forms of identification can be found at www.nwleics.gov.uk/voterID
The delivery of poll cards does not mean it’s too late to register to vote. People have until Friday 12 April to register at www.yourvotematters.co.uk
Bev Smith, Returning Officer for NWLDC, said: “It is really important we communicate to everyone in the community about the need to bring their polling card to the election on 2 May.
“Everyone has received a leaflet about voter ID with their council tax bill, and bin tags reminding people not to throw away their polling cards are in the process of being attached to wheelie bins of households throughout North West Leicestershire. We’re putting messages out on social media and we’ve been out into our communities to speak to people about the pilot.
“The message is clear – keep your polling card safe and take it with you on the day of the local elections. If anyone has any questions or concerns, our elections team is available to help.”
Anyone who loses their poll card and does not have any of the alternative forms of ID can apply for a replacement by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 01530 454512 up to 9pm on polling day.
